It has been a lot of fun seeing what everyone is weaving for this weave along. I’ve been giving ideas and patterns on Change the Shed. If you’d like to join us, you can find all the details in THIS blog post from November 13, 2024. That post includes a free PDF download with some tips for weaving and some suggested designs.
The two Change the Shed episodes where I have talked about this project so far can be found on YouTube. November 13, 2024 and November 27, 2024.
In the episode on the 27th I started a new tapestry and we talked some about choosing yarn colors, especially as it comes to value. During the broadcast I wove perhaps 3/4 of an inch in a design woven on its side. I had just gotten to a non-tree element, a holiday ball ornament that I felt compelled to weave and the live participants helped me choose which hand-dyed silk strands to use for the colors.
You can watch the episode to see how we got to the final colors. After I turned off the camera, I tried a couple different things. First I tried mixing the deep red version that was my first choice (to the left in photo below) with the lighter rose. I wasn’t fond of the spotted effect though it occurs to me I could have used it in one area to indicate a glint of light.
The second trial I liked better. I mixed the same deep red color with a more variegated ribbon in a similar value. I finished the ornament with this combination.
The finished ornament. The silk ribbon is quite firm and that makes it easier to make a circle. Still, this one is not quite round! The yellow at the top of the ornament is also silk ribbon.
Stay tuned for the rest of this project, the first tree that isn’t finished yet, and the next tree which I’ll have on the December 13th (at 10:30am MT) Change the Shed episode. The feed for that is HERE. I’ll show you what happened with the rest of this one I hope in that episode.
Winter Trees from around the USA and the world
I’ve been getting some marvelous trees from weavers. I’m including the ones I’ve received so far and hope to get many more to add to this collection in the next weeks.
If you’re posting to your Instagram account and want me to find your tree, can you please tag me with @rebeccamezofftapestry? The Change the Shed hashtag has been used by so many people who don’t have anything to do with the program that I’m not finding your trees. Please still use the #changetheshed hashtag, I just need more help finding your weaving for this project. On Facebook please tag Rebecca Mezoff’s Tapestry Studio. Or if you post in an online class I’ll see the automatically.
In the gallery below are more trees woven by people all over the world. Click on the photo to enlarge and use your arrows to scroll on a computer.
The silk ribbon I used in the photos above is sold by Mirrix Looms. Claudia hand-dyes this ribbon as well as silk yarn that weaves beautifully and comes in fun colors. Look under Weaving Materials on the Mirrix website to find them. I do not get any affiliate fees for recommending that. There are two starter packages on their website for which I do get an affiliate fee, so if you’re interested in either the Big Sister or Little Guy Looms or the Chloe loom, there are packages for those. Those are the only products Mirrix sells (those specific packages) for which I get an affiliate fee. Those of you who have worked with me a long time know that I’ll be honest about what I like and what I don’t and those packages have what I like.
