I talked about the Hot Flash tapestry I was working on last month HERE. I have now finished it as those of you who are watching my YouTube broadcasts have seen. This tapestry surprised me. It was so much fun. I definitely giggled my way through it. It turns out that a silly subject, bright colors, and playing with a challenging technique makes for a lot of fun.
When last you saw it, it looked something like this.
Yes, that is a foot. The title, Hot Flash, is quite literal. I’m pretty sure the hot flashes (power surges? really ladies? I’m skeptical…) don’t have anything to do with the coronavirus… then again, stress does make them worse!
The piece was woven sideways, so the weird foot sticking up in the air ended up looking like this.
The tapestry is 10 x 10 inches, cotton seine twine warp, wool and silk weft. The piece was woven at 8 and 16 epi. This doubled sett is something I’ve only played with a little bit on Fringeless tapestries in the past. It was really fun to be able to zoom along on the 8 epi sections and also get detail in the 16 epi sections.
I made a little video about this weaving. (If you get the blog via email, click HERE to see it.)
I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised that the piece was so enjoyable. I think what surprised me was how much fun it was to diverge wildly from the sorts of large format subjects and colors that I usually weave (you can see them in my portfolio). I had so much fun doing this that I designed a couple more.
