A new tapestry gets its first public appearance with Dolly looking on

My local library is pretty amazing. The Mancos Public Library does so much every single day for this community. For example, public schools in most of Colorado only run Monday through Thursday. What are parents supposed to do on Fridays? The library in Mancos has a program where kids can spend the whole day learning and exploring each and every Friday.

Needless to say, when one of the library directors asked me if I’d like to show my work on their art wall one month in 2025, I said yes. April 2025 is that month.

So on Tuesday I packed up two tapestries, a table*, an assortment of tape and tools, and headed to the library to install my work.

There was some debate about how high to hang these tapestries. There are a lot of people going through this library and I don’t want the tapestries handled, so I opted to hang them high enough that younger kids won’t be able to touch them.

The tapestry on the left is my newest work, Unconformity Series: Clarity. The one to the right is Emergence V: The Center Place. It was snowing as we hung these tapestries, thus the puffy vest, which honestly is a Colorado staple anyway. How do you know you’re talking to a Coloradoan? 8-9 months of the year they’ll be wearing a puffy.

I did not get the title labels done for these pieces before we hung them so I’ll be going back to the library tomorrow with those labels with a bit more information about the pieces. The table in front has a bit about me with some free bookmarks and a QR code to my website. I also brought a donation copy of my book to the library so hopefully they’ll get that in circulation soon so Mancos can learn to weave their own tapestries.

If you’d like to follow my work and see how I wove Unconformity Series: Clarity and the pieces that are coming up right behind it, I recommend joining my Patreon. The first Patreon tier shows behind the scenes on the Change the Shed pieces I’m weaving as well as other studio tricks and tips. The second and third tiers are all about my personal work. I’m working on three different series for an upcoming show and I’m not going to be sharing this work other places in the year or more until the show happens.** If you’re new to Patreon, THIS page of my website explains it further.

Dolly watches over the kids of Mancos. In a world that feels chaotic, be Dolly. She’d tell you to read a book and in a rural place like this, she quite likely also provided the book.

Dolly Parton is watching over the kids of Mancos and maybe even my tapestries.

*Always bring a big table to roll out your work before it goes on the wall. I see so many photos of shows being hung where all the artwork is right on the floor and it makes me cringe to think about all that dirt and hair attaching itself to the wool. Bring a table.

**Given the state of the world right now and the fact that my show partner is from Germany, the show is delayed indefinitely until travel in and out of the US is safe for her and her tapestries again. In the meantime, I’ll keep weaving and showing you the process on Patreon.
