What are the Tapestry Discovery Box courses?
The Tapestry Discovery Box was a subscription program sold by Gist Yarn. It included a box of Array wool tapestry yarn along with a new online course taught by me every quarter. The classes focus on hands-on instruction about one particular technique and then offer a choice of projects to practice using that technique. All of that comes with help from me and a community of other learners all over the world.
This subscription program ended after the January 2026 course. I’m now releasing the courses as stand-alone products on my teaching platform and you can use whatever yarn you want (including Gist Array!).
My goal in these classes is to present the techniques and how to use them in a way that is useful for weavers of all levels.* Even if you've been weaving tapestry for a while, practicing techniques you're familiar with while weaving focused projects is a great way to cement the concepts and broaden your use of the techniques we're focusing on.
The first course which is open now, is about weft bundling. This is a core concept in tapestry weaving and I wanted to make sure that people had a handle on it before moving on to other techniques. The image below is part of my sample which plays with mixing different colors of yarn.

Each class comes with several different cartoon ideas using the technique we’re studying. This is my example of the project for the weft bundling course that is open now. I included cartoon variations for people who wanted a simpler weaving to start with.

How did the program start?
The Tapestry Discovery Box program that was a collaboration with Gist Yarn began with their creation of Array, a beautiful tapestry wool. Sometime in 2020, Gist Yarn’s founder, Sarah Resnick, contacted me and asked me to test a new yarn she was developing for tapestry weavers. There were other testers and then Sarah took our suggestions and developed this line of tapestry yarn that comes with hue gradations and in 119 colors. The yarn rolled out in August of 2021.
The first project I did with Array was my Introduction to Tapestry Weaving course. This beginners class has now been taken by thousands of people using all kinds of tapestry yarn, but I demonstrated with Array and you can still purchase the class with a kit of yarn, warp, and a loom from Gist Yarn if you want an easy place to start.

With the success of that collaboration, I was open to Gist’s suggestion that we do a subscription product using Array and ongoing tapestry weaving courses. This was the beginning of the Tapestry Discovery Box. Gist has other subscription products like this for other kinds of weaving where you get a pattern and the yarn you need to make it. In this case, the box of yarn would come with an online course from me. As in all of my courses, the Tapestry Discovery Box also came with my continued support in terms of answering questions and helping you with your weaving.
I worked on the first courses in the fall of 2022 and we launched the yarn/course plan in January of 2023 with the Weft Bundling course that opened again this week (originally this class was called Openings).
The Tapestry Discovery Box course creation has been a joy for me. It filled a hole in my course offerings by presenting shorter classes that focused on one technique and then provided projects to practice that technique. Now that the subscription product with Gist Yarn is no longer happening, I’m happy to say that you’ll have access to these classes as stand-alone online courses. You’ll have forever access to the content with support from me whenever you have questions. There is also a great community that develops in classes especially when they first open, so if you’re debating whether to join, now is a great time if you want to be part of a group of people all working on the same thing at once.
What yarn should I use?
I want it to be clear that you can use any tapestry yarn for these Tapestry Discovery classes. I talk about yarn substitution and am happy to answer questions about what yarns you can use right in the class. Many people around the world are interested in these classes but purchasing Array in other countries can be problematic due to tariffs/customs and shipping. If you’re okay with those costs, Gist will ship to most countries. If not, there are lots of other yarns you can use.
Other people already either have all the Array colors and didn’t want more of them or they have another tapestry yarn in their stash they love to use. Those are great reasons to take the class now with whatever yarn you want to.

Since I am actively present in all my classes answering questions and providing other resources as they’re needed, I am unable to release them all at once. There just isn’t enough of me! So I’m releasing them in fairly quick succession and if the box you missed isn’t in those first three, it’ll be coming soon!

*The class is not for people who have never woven any tapestry at all. If that is you, I recommend taking the Introduction to Tapestry Weaving course first or in conjunction with these classes. They work well together, but you’ll need some help with warping and tools that I don’t give in the Tapestry Discovery courses.
